Hello South Shore community! Thank you to our panel participants and each person who joined us at our first Coffee Chat of the school year. If you were unable to join, we wanted to offer you the opportunity to watch the recording.
To translate the captions, please follow the steps in the attached document. Send any questions to southshoreptsa@gmail.com and we help answer your question or connect you with someone who can.
Summary:
Panel: Mr. H (South Shore Principal), Nurse Hilary (South Shore nurse), Dr. Capron (Pediatrician at Neighborcare and SPS parent)
Academics may be delayed BUT we are keeping our community healthy
No outbreaks at South Shore or in SPS - What we are doing is working (masks, spacing, handwashing, etc)
Pediatric mental health improvements being back in school
Please still use caution - no sleepovers, avoid carpools, etc
Quarantined and sick students
Quickest return for testing is at the Rainier Beach Testing Site at 8445 Rainier Ave S
SPS is currently using this King County Flow Chart to help determine who should quarantine and when students can return to school but expect updated guidance from SPS coming in the next week
It is hard for working parents to pick up children when symptoms seem mild - Nurse Hilary addresses symptoms first with snack and rest and only calls in parents when there are multiple symptoms that aren't clearly caused by hunger, allergies, asthma etc.
Teachers are posting content once per week, any additional support may need to come from outside sources
Vaccines
Find appointments and register for flu vaccines (age 4+) and COVID vaccines (12+) through October 21 with SPS Flu and Covid-19 Vaccine Clinics
Vaccines for kids ages 5-11 will be coming soon and South Shore may be a distribution site
Questions addressed only in chat:
Will SPS offer a rapid test? - SPS has a contract with an outside provider for tests but typically a 2-3 day turnaround
Would South Shore take a rapid home test from a family (if they provided)? - As of right now, we are accepting rapid tests, but that is going to change soon. Nurse Hilary would need a photo of the test result.
To participate in future PTSA events, please follow us on Facebook, visit our website, and consider joining PTSA using either our online member registration or complete the online cost-covered member registration.
