We are so excited that all our 4th and 5th grade students have been reading books in small groups as part of the Global Reading Challenge.
On Tuesday, February 11th from 8:30-10:30 am seven South Shore students will compete in the in-school portion of the Global Reading Challenge. We would love to have you join us in the South Shore rotunda that morning to encourage our students and the 117 other students who will be participating.
What is the Global Reading Challenge?
The Global Reading Challenge’s mission is to encourage reading as a fun and recreational activity that allows 4th and 5th grade students of all reading abilities to engage in the sport of reading. This citywide program is a collaborative effort between The Seattle Public Library and the Seattle Public Schools. Students form teams of 7 and read 10 books, then take part in a trivia competition, answering questions about the books, to determine the winner for the city of Seattle.
How can you support your student as they prepare to compete in the in-school challenge?
Every day ask your student to tell you several facts about the characters, setting and plot of the two books they have read.
What happens after the in-school challenge?
The winning team from our in-school challenge will advance to the Semi-Final competition on Thursday, March 5th at 10:30 am at the Seattle Public Library Central Branch.
Why are we so excited about the Global Reading Challenge?
Because it:
· Promotes the love of reading and it is fun!
· Introduces students to a wide variety of literature and multicultural books
· Encourages students to be part of a team
· Encourages students to read for retention
· Builds confidence and integrity in students
· Provides a positive learning experience for students, teachers/librarians and parents
· Strengthens community ties – especially with the public Libraries
· Promotes reading as a pleasurable lifelong experience
